I wanted to be able to contribute my ideas to an RSO that encourages diversity across all Asian communities as well as work with people who are just as passionate as I am about Asian cultures and issues. (Getting to meet some influential "celebrities" in the Asian community is always a bonus...)

After spending most of my first two years in the library, I realized that I wanted to be a larger part of the U of C community. My interests in Asian American studies and the arts led me to joining PanAsia, and I've really enjoyed learning about the in's and out's of event planning in a team environment.

I loved PanAsia’s emphasis on bringing together the different Asian cultures, but at the same time encouraging the cultures to remain unique. Thus, I joined so I could help to build a stronger Asian/Asian-American community within the United States. We start off small by bringing recognized Asian people to UChicago, but any step makes a difference.

I never really had an interest in my own culture, actually. I was always more interested in other cultures rather than my own and PanAsia's idea of the collective Asian identity really resonated with me. Of particular interest is the identity of the Asian-American, an individual who has to reconcile the clash of East and West - something I have personally felt.
