:: 4.06.06 :: Asians protest US immigration reforms, joining Hispanics and others in demonstrations from California to Capitol Hill. Tracy Hong from the Asian American Justice Center says that "Asians were historically discriminated against emigrating to the United States for about 200 years, so we are very wary" ...Some one million of the 14 million Asians in the United States are illegal immigrants. President George W. Bush favours a guest worker program but has firmly rejected amnesty for those who entered the country illegally. Polls have shown that Americans do not favour granting a blanket amnesty to illegal immigrants. The Asian population in the United States is projected to jump by a whopping 213 percent to 33.4 million in 2050 and their share of the nation's population would double, from 3.8 percent to 8 percent, the US Census Bureau has forecast. Asians now comprise 5 percent of the total US population and their 3.4 percent population growth rate in the 2003-2004 period makes it the highest of any race group.

:: 1.07.06 :: PanAsia will be institutionalizing Open Ceremony in collaboration with OMSA. For this year's ceremony, Panasia is still contacting performance artists and speakers, including award-winning journalist and author Helen Zia. Zia will cost $6,500 to bring to campus, so board members are currently investigating funding sources and opportunities. Also, PanAsia plans to work with Human Rights for an event on May 12-13. This quarter, Panasia may organize a Saving Face screening.
