1)
What is PanAsia? What is the concept behind PanAsia?
PanAsia is a week-long series of events centered around Asian
and Asian American lives, cultures, and issues.
PanAsia is a celebration of our ancestry, our inherited cultures, and a thoughtful, thought-provoking look at the realities, both beautiful and horrendous, of being Asian or Asian American.
In this country, Asians are among several minorities often overlooked or relegated to second-rate status. Therefore, PanAsia also seeks to bring to light the third dimension of our various ethnicities, illustrating in a unified voice that we are three-dimensional humans and as such, we have seen the entire range of human experiences - we will not be generalized and reduced to two-dimensional stereotypes. We seek to unify ourselves, explore issues that continue to plague our various peoples both in the United States and abroad, and search for why we are who we have each become.
2) Who
is sponsoring PanAsia?
There are several University of Chicago student organizations
sponsoring PanAsia 2002, including but not limited to Arab
Union, Samahan (Filipino),Studnets for Southeast Asian Civilizations,
CUSA (Chinese Undergrads), MOIM @ the Kilmok (Korean literary journal),
Loose Roots (traditional Korean percussion), Japanese Anime Society,
Lambda Phi Epsilon, SAMSU (Singaporean and Malaysian), SASA (South
Asian),South Asia Watch, JClub (Japanese) , VSA(Vietnamese). Financially,
the University of Chicago Student Government, Center for East Asian
Studies, Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations are
our current sponsors.
3) Who
are the key people organizing it?
We have a Coordinating
Committee comprised of individuals; these individuals are acting independent
of the interests of any one student organization.
4) Can
people outside the University community attend these events?
ABSOLUTELY. That
is part of our purpose in organizing such a large, concentrated week of events.
The scope of PanAsia is global; we are trying to represent half the world...
and the entire globe is invited to attend. Additionally, all PanAsia events
are FREE.
